Spider-Man: No Way Home (FILM REVIEW)
*MAY CONTAIN MINOR SPOILERS*
Film so nice, I had to watch it twice!
Not only was the film absolutely hilarious, thanks to characters like Ned, (Jacob Batalon) and the return of Jamie Foxx as Electro; but it allowed me to feel every single emotion one could feel. I was sobbing one second, laughing the next. A giddy moment here, the intense butterfly feeling in my stomach there and just pure happiness for the majority of characters involved. It was the perfect end to this Marvel journey and what a way to end by bringing back the villains that helped to create and develop this story. Appearances from Dr OX, The Green Goblin and the Lizard were simply nostalgic and truly gave the most impeccable representation of what Spider-Man is all about. New villains in this final movie would leave room for imagination; whereas bringing back several familiar faces and righting wrongs gave this franchise the closure it deserves.
The return of fan favourites had viewers going crazy. The anticipation the entire movie about who would show, what would happen, it was an adrenaline rush. Any person I’ve discussed this movie with has had different ideas of how it would unravel. Everyone was wrong. I cannot fathom how wrong we were. I want to watch it again for the first time. I want to once again feel how I felt as the minutes of this film ticked by. Let’s hope the anticipated new ‘Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ film starring Benedict Cumberbatch can bring the same amount of euphoria as ‘No Way Home’ did. Special mention to Cumberbatch who did his character justice in this movie and had just the right amount of screen time to have a real impact on the audience. I’m super excited to see how far Marvel can elevate his character.
Was there something I didn’t enjoy about ‘No Way Home’? Yes. Surprisingly, I didn’t love Zendaya’s version of MJ as much as Emma Stone’s character in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, Gwen. I felt MJ and Peter were better suited as friends. I’m aware that Zendaya and Tom Holland are in a relationship in real life, but there was barely any on screen romantic chemistry at all for me. I also didn’t enjoy how hard Zendaya tried to be a funny character. I’m sure if MJ was a more intense character, we could feel more of a flame between the protagonist and his love interest. I’m glad the end of the film wrapped up the way it did, and my only wish would be for Peter and MJ to just be ‘platonic soul mates’. During the opening few scenes, I did not expect much. I felt that the seriousness of Spider-Man wasn’t prevalent, but as we progressed, it just got better and better and greater and more fantastic.
Do I want to see another Spider-Man movie? No, the simple answer is no, I don’t. There is no way Marvel can top what they did with this movie. Whatever I would want them to do, it wouldn’t have the same effect and wow factor that this film did. The intensity myself and other viewers felt watching the cinema screen is one I don’t think we would feel in another Spider-Man movie. Maybe Spider-Man’s journey isn’t over. I think perhaps we will find Spider-Man in the multiverse again, but will it be Peter Parker? I don’t think so. Will it be Tom Holland? Definitely not.
What do I think the world needs after this movie? A Happy Hogan ‘villain origin story’. The poor man deserves the world.
